Narcan Resources
Being prepared can make all the difference in an overdose emergency. Narcan (naloxone) is a safe, effective medication that anyone can use to reverse an opioid overdose. Explore the information below to learn how to use Narcan and find free resources available in your community.
Naloxone is a medication that rapidly reverses an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. It comes in two FDA-approved forms: injectable and prepackaged nasal spray. The most common type of naloxone is a nasal spray called Narcan.
Carrying Narcan can prepare you to save a life. Learn more about how it works below.
No, Narcan does not have an effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system. You cannot overdose on Narcan. It is safe for all ages.
You also will not be harmed by touching someone just because they have overdosed on fentanyl.
Yes. Anyone can give Narcan. You should still call 911 immediately in the event of an overdose, after you provide the first dose of Narcan. If someone else is present, have them call 911 immediately while you provide the first dose.
If you are afraid of getting in trouble, the Good Samaritan Law protects you from legal liability if you are acting in good faith to try to save a life, such as administering Narcan or CPR. It also protects the person who overdosed.
More than one dose may be needed. Each box of Narcan typically has two individual, single-dose nasal spray devices. It is safe to administer more doses every 2-3 minutes to make sure the person is breathing until emergency personnel arrive.
The cost varies. Some insurance plans cover the cost. However, free Narcan is available in your community. Resources are listed below.
Narcan can be found over the counter at pharmacies. It can be purchased online. Local organizations, listed below, also provide Narcan.
